Ode To Grade One If you're looking for excitement, A little bit of fun, Walk through these doors to the class of grade one ...
What ever you're thinking, You'll change your mind, Because old-school grade one Is not what you'll find. You'll see kids on the floor, Some kids at their desks, Some are cleaning up, While others make a mess... Kids covered in paint, While some paint the walls, Their work covers the class As well as the halls! Then they head to their centres, Math, Science, English, Art, They practice their numbers And spelling to start. They're counting by ones, And two's, five's, and ten's The Math is on-going It never really ends. They're telling the time And counting with money, They're playing with cards And making patterns with bunnies. They're adding, subtracting, Subitizing, graphing... Who would have thought Math With all of this laughing! They work on their printing, They play some ELA games, They sing some songs And rhyme words to their names. They practice their spelling, And learn how to read, An important skill They really will need! They love learning through themes: The Rainforest, ocean, and bears, And write silly stories That they really like to share. They learn the five senses: Smell, sight, sound, touch, taste - Learning through experiments, Using goo, food, and paste! They learn about their families, And they learn about 'me', About when they were babies, And what they can grow up to be. They learn about the seasons: Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall - About all of the changes, And the names that they're called. Next, they head off to music, Where they sing some cool songs, They play on the orfs And bang mallets on gongs! Let's not forget gym, Where they run and play games, Learning physical fitness Is healthy and fun all the same. There's never a minute When there's nothing to do, From playing at recess To tying their shoes... From laughing and singing, To printing and spelling, Complicated Math, To creative story telling... That's what you'll see, And what can I say? Except the best way to learn Is through laughter and play. So you know that they're learning While having some fun, Because that's how they do it In the class of grade one! Mme. Borton
